How to review wrong answers in arithmetic

If you just tell your child the right answer and move on, they are likely to go wrong in the same place next time. Here is an order for sorting out why an answer was wrong, letting your child retry on their own, and then checking with new problems.

1. First, sort out why it was wrong

Even the same wrong answer calls for a different review depending on the reason. Looking at your child's answers on the grading screen, most mistakes fall into one of these four types.

TypeExampleHow to review
Simple slipAdding 7 and 8 and writing 13Most children fix it themselves when they solve it again. One round of Retry Wrong Answers is enough.
Step mistakeForgetting the carried 1, stopping partway through simplifyingHave your child say the steps out loud while solving again. Check with 3 to 5 new problems of the same type.
Missing conceptAdding the denominators too, a remainder bigger than the divisorExplain the meaning again with drawings or objects. Go back to the foundation unit if needed.
Input mistakeEntering 53 as 35, swapping the quotient and remainder boxesBuild the habit of reading the answer once more after writing it.

2. Do not show the answer right away

If you show the correct answer as soon as you look at a wrong problem again, your child tends to stop at copying it down. Have them try once more on their own first. Most simple slips get fixed at this stage.

❌ Retry Wrong Answers in Kids Math: Elementary Practice follows this order. Tap the button on the results screen and only the wrong problems come back, and the correct answers are shown only after your child submits again.

3. Review steps

  1. Look at the results together. In 📋 Grade Result on your child's screen, check the wrong problems and the answers your child wrote. Rather than scolding, look together for “Where did it go differently?”
  2. Retry only the wrong problems. Your child solves them alone with ❌ Retry Wrong Answers. After submitting, they see right away how many they got right.
  3. One more try for any still wrong. If any are left, retry them with 🔁 Retry Wrong Questions. This time, having your child explain the solution out loud shows where they get stuck.
  4. Solve problems missed twice or more together. Go over the steps for that unit together. The key unit pages set out the steps and common mistakes for each unit.
  5. Check with new problems. Solving the same problem many times lets a child remember the answer. The next day, create a few new problems from the same unit to see whether they have really learned it.

4. Look again a few days later

Getting it right on the day of review does not mean it is done. 2 to 3 days later, and again about a week later, give a few problems from the units your child missed, mixed with other units. The app creates new problems every time, so just choose the units and set a small number of problems.

On the results screen, problems answered correctly in review are marked 🔁 Review ✅. A unit's accuracy is calculated from the first grading, so whether a reviewed unit has really improved shows up in the Progress tab as graded results from newly created problems build up. For how to read accuracy, see How to choose units to practice using accuracy by unit.

5. Things to avoid

  • Scolding over the number wrong. Your child may start leaving problems they do not know blank, or guessing carelessly.
  • Reviewing too many wrong answers at once. On days with many wrong answers, pick a few and leave the rest for the next day. If that day's problems were too hard, moving down one level is also an option.
  • Only copying down the answer. After seeing the answer, cover the problem and have your child solve it again from the start.
